Grand Prairie is the next city east of us, and it is the one where our week splits down the middle. Half the calls are houses — a driveway, a back patio, a walk to the side gate. The other half come from the warehouse and light-industrial corridors: a dumpster pad breaking up, an approach beaten in by delivery trucks, an equipment pad that needs to be poured before the machine arrives.

Both halves are the same trade done to different loads. A slab that carries a loaded truck is not a thicker version of a patio; it is a different thickness, a different steel layout, a different joint spacing and a different cure before anything drives on it.

Light-commercial slabs and pads

Dumpster pads, loading approaches, equipment and generator pads, and the strip of concrete a truck turns on are the commercial work we get called for here. All of it fails the same way when it is poured like residential flatwork: 4 inches, mesh lying on the dirt, joints spaced by eye. Under repeated wheel loads that slab pumps water at the joints and breaks up at the edges within a couple of years.

What we pour instead is 6 inches or more with a tied rebar grid on chairs so the steel sits in the middle of the slab, thickened edges where the wheels land, and joints cut at roughly 2 to 2.5 times the slab thickness in feet — so a 6-inch pad is jointed every 12 to 15 feet, cut within the first day. Where a truck rolls off asphalt onto the pad, the edge gets the thickening, because that lip is where the load concentrates.

Keeping the lot working while we pour

The constraint on almost every commercial pour here is that the business still has to run. Trucks arrive, the dumpster still fills up, and half the lot cannot be closed for a week. So the schedule matters as much as the concrete: what gets demoed when, where the temporary access runs, and where the barricades sit while the slab cures.

Cure time is the part that surprises people, and it is not negotiable. On a 6-inch pad, cars and pickups stay off for 10 days and loaded trucks for 28 days, which is about when concrete reaches design strength. Putting a full trash truck on a nine-day-old pad is how a brand-new slab cracks in its first month. Plan the phasing around those dates and the pad lasts; plan around wishful thinking and you pay for it twice.

Tell us your deliveries and your dumpster pickup schedule when we walk it. Pouring one half, curing it, then doing the other is slower and costs more in mobilization, but it is often the only version that works — and it is better to price that honestly than to find out on pour day.

The residential half

The houses here run a wide range in age, so the driveway calls split between a straight replacement of a tired old slab and a new pour or widening at a newer address. The decision is the same one everywhere in this clay: if the ground under the slab has failed across most of it, patching panel by panel is chasing it, and if only a section is broken, cutting out that section at the joints and doweling in a new panel is the better value.

Patios, side-yard walks and the pad under a shed round out the residential list. A shed slab is small — a 10 by 12 pad is about 1.6 cubic yards — which is under the short-load threshold most DFW ready-mix plants charge a fee below, so a small pour costs more per foot than a big one. That is also why our job minimum is $1,800: a crew, forms and a truck cost the same to send for 120 square feet as for 600.

If a job is small on its own, say what else you have been putting off. Pouring the patio and the walk on the same day spreads one mobilization and one truck across more concrete, and it is the single easiest way to get a better number per square foot.

Common questions

Can you pour a dumpster pad without shutting the lot down?
Usually, by phasing it. We demo and pour one area while access runs through another, then swap once the first is cured enough to carry the load. It is slower and it costs more in mobilization than doing it in one shot, and we would rather price that honestly than block your loading dock for a month. How thick does a slab need to be for trucks?
Not 4 inches. A pad that carries loaded trucks or a dumpster goes 6 inches or more with a tied rebar grid held on chairs and thickened edges where the wheels come on and off. What does a commercial slab cost?
Same per-foot logic as any flatwork, moved up by thickness and steel: a 4-inch broom-finish slab is about $8 to $14 per square foot installed, 6 inches adds roughly 18 percent, and a rebar grid adds $0.60 to $1.10 per square foot. How long before delivery trucks can drive on it?
On a 6-inch pad, keep cars and pickups off for 10 days and loaded trucks off for 28 days — concrete reaches its design strength at about 28 days, and a heavy wheel load before then is how a new slab cracks in its first month.
